Epoxy seamless flooring is often called Creative Flake flooring because of the colourful acrylic flakes that are incorporated into the base coat. The wide variety of colours available means it is possible to create many different looks for the finished product.
It is a 2 part epoxy seamless flooring system, with hard wearing 2 pac epoxy placed over the base coat. Epoxy floors are anti slip and very tough and durable, they are resistant to most spills and chemicals, they aren’t affected by weather, they are low maintenance and cleaning is generally very easy.
Epoxy floors have wide appeal and are most suitable for:
- Garage floors
- Rumpus rooms
- Shop floors
One of the main benefits for the flooring business owner is that Epoxy flooring jobs are generally inside, so your work schedule is unlikely to be interrupted by weather.
Product and Application
Epoxy seamless flooring is a two part process that firstly involves the application of a water based 2 pac epoxy base coat that binds to the prepared surface. When still wet, coloured acrylic chips are spread over the surface, which is then left to dry. Once dry, two coats of clear 2 pac epoxy are applied, with the result being a gloss, anti-slip surface that will keep looking good for years.
As with any good job, preparation is one of the most critical elements to a successfully finished floor. Epoxy flooring is applied over a concrete base and it’s important that the concrete is completely sanded using a floor sander with grinding disc attachment – this removes any chemicals or other contaminants and also ensures that the product will bind well to the concrete.
An average job of $3,000 will take about 3 days to complete. During this time the surface is cleaned and prepared, the base coat and acrylic chips are applied and finally the clear top coats are added. Bear in mind that drying time is included in the 3 days so you won’t actually be on the job site for the full 3 days – in fact many operators will move on to the cleaning and preparation work of a new job while they wait for the original job to dry off. It’s not unusual to have 2 or 3 jobs on the go at one time.
Unlike many other businesses who sell similar start-up business kits, you get full, hands-on training from someone who runs his own epoxy seamless flooring business. Grant will give you all the technical detail you need to know and you can also come onto the job site with him as many times as you want to – although the system is definitely not difficult to learn and most people only need around a week on the job to feel confident they can do it themselves.
Each job has 5 distinct phases, and we’ll cover each of these in detail during your training:
- Concrete preparation, including sanding and removal of dust
- Masking of skirting boards
- Base coat application and sanding
- Flake application
- Top coat application
